Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone can benefit from massage therapy at Athlete’s Care. Therapeutic massage therapy helps reduce muscle tension and spasm, decrease swelling, pain, and inflammation, promote healing, increase blood flow to strained muscles, aid relaxation, and support injury prevention. It is especially helpful for sports-related injuries, overuse injuries, postural pain and general aches from daily activity.

Yes. All massage therapists at Athlete's Care are registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, meeting strict regulatory standards for safe, effective treatment.

No referral is required to book a massage therapy appointment at Athlete’s Care. You can book directly, though checking your insurance coverage is recommended as many extended health plans cover massage services. Many clients combine massage with physiotherapy, chiropractic, or sports medicine appointments for a coordinated treatment plan.

Most extended health insurance plans in Ontario cover massage therapy provided by a registered massage therapist, however coverage does vary by insurance provider. We recommend that you confirm these details with your provider either through your online account or by phone. You will also receive a receipt from Athlete’s Care that you can submit to your insurer.

Yes. Massage Therapy promotes blood flow, reduces inflammation, and supports tissue healing. Our RMTs regularly treat sports injuries, muscle strains, overuse conditions, and post-event soreness, often working alongside physiotherapists, chiropractors and sports medicine physicians to support recovery and return-to-activity goals.

Yes. Massage therapy can reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and address biomechanical imbalances, which supports injury-prevention programs and performance-enhancement training such as Pilates Rehab and Fascial Stretch Therapy that are offered within Athlete’s Care clinics.

Our RMTs use a blend of techniques tailored to your condition, these techniques may include:

  • Swedish massage
  • Deep tissue
  • Myofascial release
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Cupping
  • Performance taping
  • Medical acupuncture
  • Active release techniques (ART®)

Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a table-based, assisted stretching system that focuses on the fascia and joint capsules. The therapist moves you through gentle, pain-free ranges of motion to target entire movement chains rather than one isolated muscle, helping to improve flexibility, mobility, and overall body balance.

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a more specific stretching and neuromuscular technique that uses a sequence of contraction and relaxation of a muscle or muscle group to increase length and flexibility.

At Athlete’s Care, PNF is often used in shorter, targeted bouts within a physiotherapy or massage session to improve range of motion at a particular joint (for example, hamstring length), whereas FST is typically booked as a dedicated session focused on full-body or regional mobility.

Sessions are typically 30, 45, or 60 minutes. Your first visit starts with a brief medical and activity history, assessment of your area of concern, then treatment while you’re draped and comfortable. You’ll be asked to communicate any discomfort so pressure and technique can be adjusted.

Treatment frequency depends on your goals. For acute injuries, sessions may be more frequent (e.g., weekly or biweekly) initially, then taper to maintenance or “tune-up” visits. Following a comprehensive assessment, your RMT will provide a schedule and plan of care based on your needs.

Massage therapy at Athlete’s Care is medical-style treatment delivered by Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) who are regulated members of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. Treatments are goal-oriented (e.g., rehab, pain relief, performance) rather than spa-focused.

Many of our Registered Massage Therapists are trained in gentle techniques that support lymphatic circulation, such as lighter-pressure, rhythmic strokes that help move fluid and reduce general swelling. If you are specifically looking for lymphatic drainage, please let our front desk know when booking so we can match you with an RMT who has experience in this area.

Massage is often an effective adjunct to physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and sports medicine care. Your RMT will coordinate with other providers when needed to ensure your treatment plan is safe and complementary.

Yes. Athlete’s Care offers massage gift certificates at all locations, which make great gifts for athletes, busy professionals, or anyone dealing with stress and muscle tension. Certificates can be purchased during an appointment or by calling the clinic.

At Athlete’s Care, all massage therapy is provided by Registered Massage Therapists who meet provincial training and licensing requirements and provide high-quality, evidence-informed care. “Senior Associate Massage Therapy” typically refers to RMTs with additional years of clinical experience, advanced training, and/or a wider scope of specialty skills.

From a patient perspective, both “regular” and Senior Associate RMTs follow the same standards of safety and professionalism. The main differences are the therapist’s level of experience, areas of special interest, and the fee schedule attached to that appointment type.
