Frequently Asked Questions

An orthopaedic surgeon consultation is a specialist visit to assess musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, such as sports injuries, fractures, joint pain, or chronic issues like arthritis. The surgeon helps determine whether your condition can be treated non-surgically, whether you need surgery, or whether a combination of surgery and rehab is best for you.

Our orthopaedic surgeons evaluate and manage both surgical and non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • ACL reconstructions and ligament injuries
  • Knee and ankle arthroscopy
  • Achilles and lateral ankle ligament reconstruction
  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Joint replacement (knee, hip, shoulder)
  • Upper extremity pathology and general orthopaedic conditions.

Yes. Athlete’s Care orthopaedic surgeons work alongside sports medicine physicians, physiatrists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, and bracing specialists to coordinate care before and after surgery and for non-surgical treatment plans.

During your first visit, the orthopaedic surgeon will review your medical history, examine the affected area, and may order or review imaging (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, etc.). They will then discuss your diagnosis and explain whether surgery is recommended, whether non-surgical options are better, or whether a combination of both is appropriate for your condition.

Yes. A physician referral is required before you can book an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon at Athlete’s Care. Your family doctor or another healthcare provider can send the referral to our clinic, and our team will contact you to schedule your consultation.

Yes. Consultations with an orthopaedic surgeon at Athlete’s Care are covered by a valid OHIP card, just like other insured specialist visits in Ontario. However, the cost of certain procedures or injections such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or hyaluronic acid viscosupplementation are not covered by OHIP and additional fees will apply.

Orthopaedic surgeon consultations are available at multiple Athlete’s Care locations across the Greater Toronto Area, including downtown Toronto, North York, the Beach, Scarborough, Vaughan, Brampton, Oakville, and Mississauga. Check the “Locations” section of the Athlete’s Care website to find the clinic nearest to you and confirm surgeon availability.

Depending on your condition, the orthopaedic surgeon may:

  • Recommend surgery and outline the procedure, recovery timeline, and risks
  • Suggest non-surgical options such as bracing, injections, or structured rehab programs
  • Refer you back to the Athlete’s Care multidisciplinary team (physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, etc.) for pre-operative conditioning or post-operative rehabilitation.

Absolutely. Orthopaedic surgeons treat everyone from professional and Olympic athletes to recreational athletes and everyday people with injuries or joint problems, including those from work, accidents, or aging-related conditions.

Athlete’s Care orthopaedic surgeons commonly treat a wide range of surgical and non-surgical musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, especially those affecting joints, bones, and soft tissues. Commonly treated conditions include but are not limited to:

  • Sports and activity-related injuries such as ACL tears, meniscus tears, and other knee and ankle ligament injuries.
  • Shoulder injuries, including rotator cuff tears, impingement, and instability requiring arthroscopic or open surgery.
  • Joint pain and degeneration such as osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, or shoulder, which may be managed with injections or joint-replacement surgery.
  • Fractures, dislocations, and other trauma-related injuries to the upper and lower extremities.
  • Tendon and overuse problems such as Achilles tendon pathology, tennis elbow, and other chronic tendon issues that may need surgical or advanced non-surgical care.

Yes. Our orthopaedic surgeons at Athlete’s Care provide non-surgical consultations to determine whether surgery is necessary or whether your sports injury can be managed with medications, rehab, injections and bracing. If surgery is not required, they will recommend a conservative treatment plan and coordinate with our multidisciplinary team (physiotherapy, massage therapy and chiropractic care) to support your recovery and return to sport.
